Topbrands - by B&S
Topbrands by B&S offers quality personal and home care products to customers around the world, with a portfolio ranging from A-Brands to own brands. The Topbrands private labels such as Sence and At Home are always evolving – for the benefit of our customers, consumers, and the planet! With environmentally friendly packaging, plastic-free products and natural formulas. The same goes for products we make under licences such as Disney. In the process, we’re realising our ambition to expand our range of sustainable and responsibly produced products.
Responsible sourcing practices
Suppliers must follow our strict standards for human rights, labour conditions, the environment, and anti-corruption. For private label and licenses products, Topbrands exclusively works with suppliers that are externally certified and/or audited.

Natural formulas
In the world of personal care and homecare, chemistry is everything. The right ingredients, natural or synthetic, come together to achieve the perfect scent, the right consistency, and best results. In our private label products, these ingredients are increasingly more sustainable. Angelique Michels, Director Brand, Private Label & Licenses at Topbrands: “We've worked closely with our production partners to improve our formulas, using natural and more sustainable ingredients whenever possible.” The moisturising face masks are now made of certified organic bamboo which saves 15,000 kilos of plastic per year. The glycerine in personal care products and beeswax in lip balms have been replaced with vegan variants. Angelique: “We showcase that we can achieve the same quality using environmentally friendly and animal friendly ingredients.”

No unnecessary ingredients
To select more sustainable ingredients, the simple act of leaving out unnecessary ingredients is contributing to a more sustainable product range. For example by removing microplastics, tiny plastic particles used for scrubbing and other functions, from personal care products. Angelique: “The use of microplastics in certain products has since been banned by law. We don't wait for that and instead proactively improved it from our products.”
Sustainable packaging
Packaging too plays an important role in being resource conscious. By optimising packaging solutions, making boxes as small as possible, less materials are used, and more products can be loaded into a single container avoiding unnecessary transport emissions. Topbrands replaced virgin with recycled plastics as well as removed sleeves from bottles, making them suitable for recycling. And refills for cleaning products are now available in powder form, which can be packaged sustainably, are easy to transport, and allow consumers to reuse their plastic spray bottles.
Angelique: “We also replaced plastic with FSC certified paper and cardboard, so that the packaging can be easier recycled after use. And, we chose to leave out non-recyclable decorations like bows and ribbons whilst still having appealable designs.” In total, Topbrands removed plastic components from 2 million packaging items saving 8,000 kilos of plastic annually. The upgraded packaging is key to achieving our 2030 sustainability targets. It’s also the way the market is going as more and more retailers have sustainability goals similar to ours.
Working towards recyclable packaging
The ongoing improvements to the Topbrands product range are evidence of our commitment to offering sustainable products. In recent years, our entire assortment has become more sustainable. But we’re not done yet. We’re working hard to replace non-recyclable plastics with recyclable options. Ultimately, we’d like to eliminate plastic altogether. By staying on top of industry developments and innovations, we’ll always offer the best possible option to our customers.
